Overview

The most important part of making this promo film to me was figuring out how to set a mood and tone that accurately reflected Nick’s brand and personality in order to attract clients that resonate with him.

Challenges & Approach

I already know him quite well, so I knew that a video with fast cuts wasn’t going to suit him. I know that he has a preference for filmic looks and has a quiet nature so that’s the look and feel I went for when shooting and editing.

The main challenge was lighting, since I had to travel light and had nothing except the camera and lens selection. I placed him at the window, which often works well to give a natural feel. I used vintage Contax Zeiss lenses with a Tiffen Glimmer Glass to give a subtle hazy look, something I knew that he would like because he uses one himself.

Another part of this that was tricky was the lack of a second camera for an alternative angle. Because I knew I would want to be cutting up his answers a lot I filmed a few of the questions twice from different angles so I could have some freedom in post.

The result

It’s difficult not to let what you want from a project get in the way of what the client needs or asks for. In this case I had some freedom but still tried to channel his ideas and energy rather than push for everything I wanted.
